Why All the Calls? The Truth About Medicare Telemarketers

May 4, 2022 | Medicare Guidance

Medicare telemarketers have been around for a long time, but it seems as if they have gotten so much worse than we have ever experienced. Let’s take a deeper look into what is the driving force behind these calls and what you can do when you are contacted by Medicare telemarketers.

Playing by the Medicare Compliance Rules?

There are several compliance rules when it comes to selling Medicare. Technically, agents cannot approach you, the client, unless the client requests to be approached. There is a lot of gray area here. For instance, if you request information online, you are giving permission for the agent or agency to contact you. If you respond to written correspondence, you are giving permission to contact.

We all know that the numerous calls that Medicare clients receive on a daily basis have NOT been requested by the client. These calls come from telemarketers or spammers. Telemarketers will claim they work with insurance companies. They get you excited about one specific benefit, whether it be a copay, vision, hearing, dental or food benefit. They talk fast, aggressive, and often put pressure on you to make a decision immediately. You are then transferred to an insurance agent who records the call and sets up the policy. The recorded call is compliant with Medicare, but the initial call to you typically is not.

Tips for Avoiding Medicare Telemarketers

There are really good agents in the field, and there are really bad ones. The bad ones will pressure you to buy immediately, talk over you, not allow you to ask questions or not answer your questions. Here are tips for avoiding Medicare telemarketers and being signed up for a plan that may not be your best choice:

  • The easiest way to avoid being caught up in a telemarketer’s ploy is to simply not talk to them.
  • You can also help to decrease the likelihood of being contacted by a telemarketer – Medicare or otherwise – by registering your phone numbers on the DO NOT CALL list by calling 1-888-382-1222.
  • Work with a Medicare agent who allows you to ask questions, who doesn’t mind doing research for you, and who allows you the time you need to make the best decision for you.
